India’s Richest Woman, Savitri Jindal, Resigns from Congress, Likely to Join BJP

top-news

India witnessed a significant political development as Savitri Jindal, the country’s richest woman with a net worth of $29.1 billion, tendered her resignation from the Congress party on Thursday, March 28. This move comes shortly after her son Naveen Jindal, a former Congress MP, switched sides and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Savitri Jindal, renowned as the Chairperson Emeritus of the OP Jindal Group, has been a prominent figure in Haryana politics, having served as a member of the legislative assembly and held ministerial positions in the Congress-led state government. Her decision to step down from the Congress and potentially align with the BJP signifies a significant shift in political affiliations within the Jindal family.

The political landscape in Haryana is set for a notable transformation as Naveen Jindal, who previously represented the Kurukshetra constituency in Lok Sabha as a Congress MP from 2004 to 2014, is poised to contest the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 from the same seat, albeit under the BJP banner. This strategic move by the Jindal family follows the BJP’s sweeping victory in all ten seats of Haryana during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

The transition has not been without controversy, as Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh took a sharp dig at Naveen Jindal’s departure. Ramesh sarcastically remarked that a “giant-size washing machine” was needed after Jindal’s resignation, highlighting ongoing investigations by agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into alleged irregularities involving Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL), chaired by Naveen Jindal.

Ramesh’s comments alluded to the BJP’s mission of a “Congress-mukt Bharat” and the perceived migration of individuals facing legal scrutiny to the ruling party’s fold. The ED is currently probing money laundering charges against JSPL related to the allocation of a Jharkhand coal block, with investigations revealing broader financial irregularities within the company.

Savitri Jindal’s decision to part ways with the Congress and her potential entry into the BJP fold adds a new dimension to the unfolding political dynamics in Haryana, setting the stage for a riveting electoral contest in the region.
